Students Go Insane in Preparation for The Rich Culture
It was that time of year again; students prepared posters, drawing, dances, and traditional games to display across the school. Students can learn about the rich cultures of the various Hispanic countries during the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. Everyone including those that do not come from Hispanic backgrounds are able to appreciate this event and have fun while also learning!
I got the opportunity to talk to some students who participated in this year’s celebrations, many expressing the importance of having an event that highlights the culture of many students in the school. Matheus C. stated that he felt as if he was paying “respect to my Hispanic people and elders” while show casing the Hispanic culture. Even those who do not come from Hispanic backgrounds felt like this event helped them learn, and as Fitzgerald said “I get this information and then I could just carry this information around. So, I can spread it to different people.” Baison W. also feels that partaking in this celebration helps him celebrate his best friend and his family whom he is very close with.
The celebrations did not just stop with informational posters though. There were music and dancing, traditional games and many dressed up in their traditional clothing from their different countries. For instance, Ana R. decided to come in a traditional dress from Mexico called the Adelita. She states that the Adelita dress got its name from “Ah woman from Mexico that fought during the Mexican revolution.” We can really see how even the clothing items from different countries have such a rich history behind them!

Talking with one the organizers of this event, Ms. Gomez expressed how important it was educating people in how there are many ways of doing things, ways that many students in the school use. She talked about how her students were able to “learn while making their posters. They also would ask a lot of questions…” which showed the clear interest in the Hispanic culture. Ms. Gomez hopes that in the future this event can be bigger, for more student to partake and enjoy the Hispanic culture. Everyone also stated how one thing they would like to do this would be: food. Food forms such a crucial part in the Hispanic culture, the many countries having so many traditional dishes. Everyone expressed their desire to participate in this event again and hopefully make it better each year!
