Do smart passes actually help keep kids on track?

Ever since our school introduced Smart Passes, students have been acting secret agents on a special mission…except their mission is just to get to the bathroom. SmartPass was introduced at our school to help keep students in class and limit unnecessary time in the hallways. According to Mr. Feeny, “It was supposed to increase the amount of students that were in the classroom. We want students in the classroom learning, and it is also to have some level of accountability.”
Since using SmartPass, teachers have noticed a decrease in the number of students in the halls. Mr. Feeny said the change was not required by the state; it just made sense as the school moved toward more digital systems. He also shared that student feedback has been “mostly positive.”
Students, however, have mixed opinions. Julie, a student, said SmartPass helps keep students on track, but the timing could be more flexible. “Sometimes the times aren’t convenient,” she said. “Some students don’t even use them correctly, but overall, I think they’re helpful.”
Overall, SmartPass seems to be meeting its goal of keeping students in class and more accountable for their time, even if some students are still adjusting to the new system.
