If you’ve ever stayed after school, you may have heard the loud bounces and screams that come from the gymnasium. Peek through the window, and you’ll find students from all schools making insane free throws and 3-pointers.
This edition’s spotlight will feature the Basketball Club, hosted by Mr. Klein and Mr. Decastro. Started by Klein during the founding years of this school, anybody with a passion for or interest in basketball is welcome to join every Friday after school in the gym.
“I always equated the two, teaching and basketball,” Klein said. “It gave me a connection to students who liked basketball.” Klein adds, “I ran the gym in my old school, so it’s really been a staple since year 1. It is year 28 teaching, it’s hard to believe that.”
The club begins with the students throwing shots around and getting warmed up. After the club splits up into 4 teams that teams battle each other to victory.
These games can get intense , but the environment is really made up of support and love for the game. “I want to be thankful for Decastro, but also most importantly, the seniors who have been with me since freshman year.
Klein stated how he equated teaching and basketball, and you can truly see that by the way he speaks of this club. He calls it a labor of love and a way for him to connect to his students. This club is a way for students to get out any pent-up energy, and it serves as an outlet. Although he describes himself as a “wet noodle” after the club, we all do appreciate the work he has done for this school and the students!
