It was that time of year again; students prepared posters, drawing, dances, and traditional games to display across the school. Students can learn about the rich cultures of the various Hispanic countries during the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. Multiple students around the campus were asked a series of questions; all of the questions were the same. But, none of the answers that were received were the same; the students were asked about the struggles they faced with mental health while in school. One student recalled having to step out of the classroom just so they could get some fresh air and walk around a bit to calm themselves down. Another student had tried to speak to the councilor about some problems they were facing, they were told to schedule another meeting with the councilor since they were “too busy dealing with other students’ schedules at the moment.” It’s no surprise this is the response some students get; the councilor has at least a hundred students to help.
